It is important that residents run water in the shower, sink, and toilet of unused bathrooms monthly. When drains aren’t used regularly, the water barrier in the pipes beneath the drain can evaporate, leaving an open path for sewer odors to enter the home. To fix this just pour a quart of water or run water for a few minutes down the drain to refill the trap beneath and seal out sewer odors. If the smell persists, the trap may be old or leaky, and professional plumber may be needed to examine and replace the trap.
Studor Vents (found in bathrooms) can also go bad, causing sewer odors. Home Depot has screw in replacements for around $20.
If you have a plumbing issue and think it’s an association responsibility, get a licensed reputable vendor to diagnose, fix, and document.
